Fly by Midnight's "Brooklyn" - Single Review

Once you get over the shock of how extremely gorgeous emerging pop duo Fly by Midnight (Justin Bryte and Justin Slaven) are, you'll be quick to realize how brilliant the two are at crafting refreshing and infectious retro-styled synth pop music. Their debut release, "Brooklyn", is the perfect blend of electronic production with indie-alternative vocal performances, poised for a summer takeover.

"Brooklyn" describes the lovesick boys involved in a "reckless romantic fling" while venturing through the most populated borough of New York City. With an electro sound similar to that of indie-pop group Capital Cities, the newly formed Fly by Midnight aren't shying away from the dominating carefree, bubblegum pop nature of the debut track. With excessive, but impressive, vocoder usage (Cher would be proud), the duo have effortlessly created an enjoyable, fun tune.

While the initial impression of the songwriting may turn some people off (high on oregano, really?), it does get much better as it progresses and highlights the act's narrative songwriting, painting a vivid picture of the doomed romance. "Polaroid queen, for the last few nights, you've dominated my dreams," the duo sings before a chant-heavy, video game-like chorus comes through.

For a first offering, the new "Brooklyn" is a steamy, deliciously explicit, predominantly pop track that focuses equal attention on radio-friendly production and an intriguing vocal delivery. When it comes to finding a top-down, head-nodding bop, Fly by Midnight may have just entered a late submission for summer smash consideration. Write it off as a simple guilty pleasure if you want... but it's pretty good.

Fly by Midnight are not just attractive, they are talented. The precise mix of electro, synths, pop and alternative influences have created a finished product that listeners will gravitate towards, and find difficult to not replay for hours straight. The track does exactly what a debut single should, building positive buzz for a full length. Hopefully that comes soon.

UPDATE (07/20/2015): The polished, colorful, adorable yet slightly heartbreaking music video in support of "Brooklyn" was released today. Fly By Midnight hit this one out of the park as they mentor a young, lovestruck kid on how to win over the girl of his dreams with the help of stylish outfits, diner food and the perfect red rose.
