Nicole Scherzinger's "On The Rocks" - Single Review

Nicole Scherzinger has been hit with every form of criticism since the disbandment of her group The Pussycat Dolls, but the impressive vocalist keeps getting up. Following the UK success of poppy, insanely catchy "Your Love", the artist is rolling out her next single, rumored to her first official release in the U.S. from her upcoming album.

"On The Rocks" is a simple R&B ballad that incorporates mid-tempo, throwback production. Unlike the energetic, infectious nature of her last effort, the new single takes a more subtle, adult contemporary approach. While definitely a pop release, the song does contain a few other genre influences. Though there are traces of the dreaded AutoTune technology heard throughout, background noise is dialed back to allow for another flawless vocal performance from Scherzinger.

As she reflects on a past relationship, probably with a strong dark liquor swirling around in her glass, the former Pussycat Doll is still moving forward in life. "Let's take a shot, since you've been taking shots, and allow me to serve you this drink up on the rocks," she croons on the vulnerable, slightly snarky chorus. The vibe is somber, the artist sounds to be hurting, but there's some light at the end of the tunnel for her.

Compared to her moderately successful previous single, "On The Rocks" is an unfortunate small step back for the singer. While not as immediately memorable, the new track is still an extremely promising piece of R&B/pop that highlights what makes Scherzinger a talented solo artist who deserves more attention than she has been receiving. With strong vocals and solid songwriting, Scherzinger has revealed a commendable ballad.
