| Mother's outrage after daughter's ear piercing got infected - Daily Mail Posted: 11 Jun 2019 12:00 AM PDT A furious mother has slammed Claire's Accessories after her daughter's birthday treat piercing became so infected it had to be 'dug out of her ear' and treated with strong antibiotics. Katy Jordan claims she was horrified when the £45 birthday gift for 10-year-old Isabelle Whitaker turned to tears after the earring got buried in her ear when infected skin grew over it. The 36-year-old mum claims she saw the Claire's Accessories staff member was serving other customers while still wearing the supposedly sterile piercing gloves.  Katy Jordan, left, pictured with her daughter Isabelle Whitaker, right, took the youngster to Claire's Accessories in Keighley, West Yorkshire to have her ears pierced  Several days after the stud was fitted, Isabelle was complaining about the pain and Ms Jordan noticed it had swollen slightly  Ms Jordan noticed that a strand of her daughter's hair had been caught with the stud and could have led to the problem Ms Jordan, who is a nursery deputy manager said despite cleaning her ears twice a day with the chain's £5 aftercare lotion the schoolgirl was left screaming from the pain in her right ear. After extracting the earring a week later Ms Jordan said she discovered a 'big ball of infection' containing Isabelle's hair that had got tangled in the piercing. Once the embedded earring was removed Ms Jordan claimed the infection started to spread around and inside her ear and she rushed Isabelle to the doctors. A concerned GP reportedly issued a strong course of antibiotics to tackle the infection and warned Ms Jordan to be vigilant of sepsis symptoms developing - resulting in her sitting up all night monitoring her daughter. Ms Jordan, from Keighley, West Yorkshire, said: 'Isabelle's birthday treat ended up with her at the doctors on antibiotics and me on sepsis watch through the night. I didn't sleep at all that night. 'The doctor we saw was shocked and said it was quite a bad infection. 'She put her on a high dose of antibiotics and told us the warning signs for sepsis. 'The doctor said I needed to be aware that if she started struggling for breath or her temperature rocketed I needed to take her to A&E.  Ms Jordan said the doctor warned her to watch out for the possible symptoms of sepsis  Ms Jordan said she was forced to remove the stud and then noticed the piercing had been infected so brought her daughter to the doctor   Ms Jordan took several photographs of the infected ear to chronicle her daughter's plight 'Thankfully the antibiotics worked but it could have been a lot worse. If I hadn't taken her to the doctors that day, you don't know what could have happened.' Ms Jordan claimed the issues began when she discovered just one person working in the Keighley branch when they arrived at 4pm on April 30. The mother-of-two says the solitary worker was in the middle of piercing someone's ears when they walked through the doors and stopped part-way through to serve customers at the till. It was then the pair were reportedly offered a sheet detailing the earrings that could be used during a piercing. Ms Jordan said: 'It was so unorganised and ended up waiting 20 minutes to be served.  Ms Jordan said the member of staff was working single-handed and serving customers while performing piercings 'We were waiting for this other lady to get her ears pierced - she was going between her and serving customers. 'When she eventually sat Isabelle down something that should have been a two-minute job took 20 minutes. 'She wasn't concentrating - she kept going between us and the till with these white gloves on. 'Obviously she's been told she's got to run the shop and pierce ears at the same time.' Ms Jordan and Isabelle chose gold-plated earrings in a bid to ensure the piercing wouldn't get infected and the schoolgirl went home thrilled to be wearing the turquoise-coloured studs. The following morning Isabelle complained that her right ear was sore but, believing the pain to be caused by it being a new piercing, Ms Jordan diligently cleaned it with the solution. Despite easily twisting the left piercing neither Ms Jordan nor Isabelle were able to twist the piercing on the right ear because the earring back was reportedly on 'too tight'. Ms Jordan said: 'We cleaned the piercing morning and night but the right earring wouldn't twist as it was on too tight. 'The back was pushed into the skin so when it started to heal the skin was trying to heal over the earring. 'We used salt water on it too because it started to look a bit swollen and it looked as though the back was pushing into the skin.' Five days after getting her ears pierced Isabelle complained that her ear was still sore so Ms Jordan replaced the stainless steel back with a rubber one in the hope of easing her discomfort. However the following day Ms Jordan realised the earring had to come out due to how infected and swollen it had become. Ms Jordan said: 'We hoped it would go down and sort itself out. Isabelle didn't want me to take it out as she didn't want to have just one earring in because she said it would look strange. 'She does dancing as well so she wanted to look nice for her competition. 'I sat her down and said "we've got to take this out". She was really upset and she obviously screamed when I pulled it out, it was absolutely horrific.  Ms Jordan said the piercing in her daughter's left ear was fine but has been upset by her experience and was crying in pain while the right earring was removed 'I had to dig the earring out from under the skin using a cotton bud and some of the aftercare lotion. 'I had to scrape the skin off the front of the ear until we could see the head of the earring, it was like doing a mini operation at home. 'It took 15 minutes as I had to take out a little bit of skin at a time. She was screaming - it was so awful and upsetting. 'When I took the earring out she had a big ball under her skin of what looked like dry infection or a scab, I don't know what it was. 'The infection had already started to spread before I took the earring out but it got worse and worse after. 'The infection was all down the back of her ear, the front of her ear and going into her ear as well. 'At some point, while she's been asleep or her hair's been down, and it's obviously got caught in there - in the scab there was a bit of hair in there too. 'The skin had also grown over the front of the earring - in pictures it just looks like skin but I know under that there was an earring. 'Who knew an ear piercing could end up in such a disaster?' Concerned Ms Jordan kept Isabelle off school the following day and took her to their local GP surgery where the schoolgirl was put on a course of strong antibiotics and warned about sepsis symptoms. Ms Jordan said: 'I think the GP was being overly cautious but not scaremongering - she was genuinely saying we needed to be careful. 'Thankfully the antibiotics, an adult dose four times a day, worked really quickly. 'It was supposed to be a present for her, it was supposed to be something nice. 'I left the other earring in because I thought if she's going to get them re-pierced she may as well just get one done - at least she has half of her birthday present in.' Ms Jordan said it has been difficult complaining about the service her family received at Claire's Accessories. She said: 'I've been in the store three times to complain and submitted a complaint online and I've still not heard anything back. 'Claire's Accessories need to train their staff better and they shouldn't be leaving one person on the shop floor. 'We should get a refund at least and some kind of compensation for what my daughter has been through. 'Thankfully the antibiotics worked but it could have been a lot worse. If I hadn't taken her to the doctors that day you don't know what could have happened.' Isabelle said: 'I'd been really looking forward to getting my ears pierced as I thought they would look nice and my friends also have them done. 'I was really excited when I was sat in the chair, the earrings I chose had a stone in my favourite colour. 'It was really exciting to see the earrings in my ears afterwards but soon it felt really bad and really hurt. 'Mum had to take the earring out because it went all weird. The doctor said we had to watch out for sepsis. 'I felt a bit scared but then the antibiotics made me feel better. 'My right ear is feeling ok now but I'm feeling a little bit scared about getting it pierced again.' A Claire's Accessories spokesperson said: 'The safety and well-being of every Claire's customer is our absolute priority. 'Over the last 40 years we have performed over 100 million ear piercing procedures, and nothing is more important than our record of customer service and satisfaction. 'We are investigating this matter and have reached out to Ms Jordan to discuss her concerns.' Buzz60 Adrienne Wiest's style can be best described as grandma gone wild. The fashion blogger-turned-Instagrammer specializes in creating one-of-a-kind looks with retro finds. Known by her Instagram handle, The Vintage Epicurean, Wiest loves everything quirky. Her feed is full of gawky rhinestones, bold colors and structured shoulder pads. But her unique style isn't the only thing that sets her apart from other influencers. Wiest doesn't take her outfits or online presence too seriously, and she never has. The 34-year-old Oak Ridge native remembers slipping on a borrowed pair of her mom's stilettos and strutting down the halls of her high school, like it was her personal runway. "I have always dressed this way. I've always loved fashion, dressing up and the idea of wearable art. It was just a fun, entertaining part of my day," Wiest said. "And even now, it elevates my mood." Now, the aisles of the University of Tennessee Medical Center serve as her catwalk ,and runway shows are her muse. Wiest is a registered nurse by day and a blogger by, well ,day too. Weist didn't plan on becoming an Instagram influencer, but she figured why let her job or the ever-multiplying number of blogs stop her? So she opened her laptop and got to work. Wiest already had a history of modelling semi-professionally - if you count her painfully early-2000s Model Search America head shots. But she really started her style side hustle after getting requests from friends and local photographers for her to pose for photo shoots. Wiest took as many as she could and did her own hair, makeup and styling. The more she did, the more people asked her to model for them. "I was really getting to express what I like doing and getting so much positive feedback," Wiest said. "I was like, 'Maybe there's something there?" I finally mustered up the guts because I felt kind of cheesy starting another fashion blog. I was like, 'Well, that's not a reason not to do it'." That was a year ago. Since then Wiest has written blog posts about her styling process, the inspiration behind every outfit and a little bit of life advice here and there. Instagram has really been the place where her content thrives though. Wiest started posting modelling photos on her personal account - if you scroll far enough you'll even see some posts with the original Instagram filters and frames. Offline, Wiest says her closet's chaotic, but there's a method to all the madness, especially when it comes to adding to her crammed collection. She buys from online stores like eBay and Etsy and shops locally at thrift shops and curated boutiques. For Wiest, the chase is all about a good buy. "You get a lot for what you pay for, and there's less buyer's remorse with thrifting. I mean, if you spend $6 on something, that's as much as a cup of coffee. And once you get your thrill out of it, you can just donate it back." Donating used clothes back to places like Goodwill and KARM is an important part of Wiest's process. "I feel like it's not going to keep giving you something if you don't get back into it as well," she said. "What is interesting about thrift shopping is that it's like renting clothes. You can get stuff, wear it for a while and if you get tired of it, you donate it back. Then it can be somebody else's for a while. I like to think of it as continuing this mysterious legacy of the people that wore them and giving somebody else the opportunity to enjoy them." Shopping for eccentric clothing is one thing, but being bold to wear it is another. Wiest said standing out in an Instagrammable world isn't always an easy thing to do. "It's taken me a long time to build that confidence and figure out my personal style," Wiest said. "Like a lot of people I was always trying to fit into a box and felt very insecure for a really long time. Photo shoots and positive reinforcement from friends and followers helped Wiest get out of her comfort zone and own her personal style. But she gets that her fashion sense isn't for everyone. "If you don't want to wear shiny American Apparel disco pants and rhinestone earrings, then you don't have to," Wiest said. "I think that you should just wear what makes you feel happy." Uncanny confidence doesn't just happen, but Wiest says that as long as you like what you're wearing and put it on with purpose, you can't go wrong. Most importantly though, Wiest says to show yourself some love and cut yourself some slack. "If you really love something, wear it," Wiest said. "But if it makes you nervous, then definitely wear it."
